How can Play Therapy help my child?

Helping Young People Feel Heard & Understood

As parents, it can be difficult to know how best to support our children emotionally. Often, we sense that something is wrong, yet struggle to understand what our child truly needs or is trying to express.

For children, play is a natural and powerful way of exploring their inner world. Through role-play, art, and creative activities, children are able to express emotions, work through challenges, and experiment with different ways of coping and problem-solving.

You may notice your child appearing sad, disruptive, rebellious, or overwhelmed, or struggling with focus and attention in the classroom. While children may not yet have the words to explain how they feel, play allows them to communicate safely and meaningfully.

Play therapy provides a supportive space where children can process emotional difficulties, build resilience, and develop healthy ways of understanding themselves, others, and the world around them. Supporting children’s mental health early is vital, and play therapy offers a gentle yet effective way to help them grow, heal, and thrive.

When Might Counselling Help?

Child & Teen Counselling

You don’t need all the answers to reach out.

A Different Approach for Every Age

Children

Children often communicate through play and creativity before they can explain their experiences in words.

My postgraduate training in Therapeutic Play Skills allows me to incorporate developmentally appropriate play and creative approaches alongside counselling.

Sessions are tailored to your child's age, personality and individual needs.

Teenagers

Teenagers often need somewhere they can speak openly without feeling judged or pressured.

Counselling can provide a confidential and supportive space to explore emotions, relationships, anxiety, identity, school pressures and other challenges.

Teenage counselling is available face-to-face in Karaka and online throughout New Zealand.

Supporting Parents Too

Parents and caregivers are an important part of supporting a young person's wellbeing.

Where appropriate, I work collaboratively with parents while also respecting the young person's privacy and therapeutic relationship.

We can discuss what level of parental involvement is most appropriate depending on your child's age, needs and circumstances.

Dean - was diagnosed with ADHD. His mom and dad were concerned because he couldn't finish his work in class. Within six sessions, we had an action plan to help him. He is doing great in school and, the teachers have commented on his positive progress.

ADHD | Anxiety | Confidence

Jason - was blessed with a new baby brother. However, it turned out that he needed a bit of support to understand his place in this new family unit. After a few sessions, he had renewed confidence in himself and how he had to be the big brother to his new baby brother.

Anger | Overwhelm | Confidence

Lara - had separation anxiety. She didn't want to go to school on her own. She would have a meltdown at the gate every morning. Within 6 sessions of therapy, she was able to say how she feels, and we could address her fears.

Anxiety | Confidence | Overwhelm

Ages 5 - 12

Play Therapy is a fun way to support your child's mental health.  With more children becoming anxious, we need to help them sooner rather than later.  We also help them with anger, sadness, anxiety, loss and bereavement, friendships, and mood.

EMDR for children

EMDR is effective and well supported by research evidence for treating children with post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD), attachment challenges, disassociation and self-regulation.

It has also been effective in treating symptoms related to anger, guilt, low mood, and anxiety and can be used to boost self-confidence.

The World Health Organisation recommend two psychotherapies for children, adolescents, and adults with PTSD - cognitive behavioural therapy and EMDR.

EMDR is described by therapists as significantly more efficient than other therapies.
